A Legendary Story of Perseverance
Six times Robert the Bruce of Scotland lead his army against the enemy (England). Six times they were defeated, until they were scattered across Scotland. Robert was forced to hide in caves to avoid the enemy soldiers looking for him. He sat, discouraged and defeated, in a cave and watched as a spider tried to throw its web from one side of the cave to the other. Six times it tried and failed. Yet each time the spider fell, it would slowly climb its way back up and try again. On the seventh attempt, the spider managed to get the web to stick and began to spin its web. Robert was inspired by the spider, and later with his small army of 5000, defeated the English army of 20,000 at the Battle of Bannockburn, winning independence for Scotland.
